Design Camp Las Vegas “… a Hit!”

Hi Lori & Kelli!

Your event was outstanding and I’m in awe of you both as I can only imagine the logistics that went in to orchestrating an event of this magnitude.  The speakers were fabulous and I was able to take away invaluable nuggets from each and every one of them!  Your energy was contageous and I could feel how everyone in the room was instantly infused by that electricity.

Look forward to speaking with you soon!

Best,
Lori

Design Camp at LV market

August 3, 2014   Barefoot Musings

Its been such a fun and exciting week in the world of Interior Design on the west coast. This week I got to go to my first Design Camp at Las Vegas Summer Market. I’d heard a lot of good things about Design Camp and was excited to take part in this special event. If you are at all considering attending a future one, I encourage you to do so. You will not be disappointed.

Lori and Kelli getting the day started.

Lori and Kelli getting the day started.

Kelli Ellis and Lori Dennis have put together something that the design community has needed for years! a two day event packed with educational and inspirational speakers all designed to take your practice to the next level. Nice work ladies! As someone who’s been practicing design for nearly, um, 20 years. (Yes, I said 20) I wasn’t sure what design camp could teach me. But to my surprise I was both educated and inspired. From Bill Indursky’s fun presentation on current design trends, to Susanne Salk’s industry insights into how to get work published, to the brilliant Adam Japko’s talk on social media and marketing.

Design camp is also an opportunity to meet and connect with hundreds of designers from all around the country as well as discover great new market introductions from some of our favorite brands like Orient Express, Noir, Made Goods, Interlude Home, Lexington, Global Views, Lamps Plus, and others… Scavenger hunts, games, giveaways, parties, and educational workshops. Priceless.

Rona and I at Orient Express. Great furniture. Great people.

Rona and I at Orient Express. Great furniture. Great people.

I sincerely feel blessed to have been included and look forward to taking part in future Design Camps. You’re never too old to learn a new thing or two.

Thanks ladies!

Good times in Las Vegas

…[T]hank you Kelli and Lori for the opportunity to participate in this. You managed to create something that was epic but organized, professional but fun, and to generate a real sense of group camaraderie, which is so often the special sauce missing from a lot of these events. Well done! I miss Design Camp already. :, (

Best,
Henry

Hello Kelli and Lori… I just wanted to take a moment while everything was fresh in my mind to tell you how inspired I was by this week. The speaker lineup was fantastic and I took copious notes the entire time. Some of my favorites were:

  • Bill Indursky, I won the web site development and can’t wait to get my site up and running.
  • Aaron Danzig on positioning your brand and point of differentiation
  • Roger Thomas’s incredible images and design process
  • Kimberley Seldon’s dynamic “Business of Design” presentation where I probably learned the most and YES bought her books
  • Katy Garrett’s Tech panel. I’m following up with Ross Barlett to learn more about his product and think I found my drawing solution.
  • Chris Kennedy’s passionate furniture presentation.
  • Phil Pallen’s humorous and hilariously funny approach to Twitter, and YES bought his book too.
The other amazing thing about this week were the amazing people in attendance and the sharing and networking that took place. This is a career change for me and I met some amazing people who gave me confidence in my abilities and have volunteered to be there offering their assistance if I have any questions or doubts. Our little round table group is even planning a weekly call to inspire each other.
Thank You again for a fantastic week. I look forward to the next Design Camp.

Thank you again for an amazing camp.  Trisha and I were both blown away by how great this event was.  Such a great group of engaged designers and the event itself was so well organized.  Kudos to both you and Kelli!

A Factory at Your Fingertips

When we design a room, we  want our clients to clearly spot our hand in the design.  If you’re a detail-oriented person (control freak) like us, then there are few things better than custom furniture lines that put their factory at your fingertips. You design it–someone else makes it. Done. Amazing. After experimenting with a handful of custom upholstery lines, we found our absolute favorite: Bassett

CU-PillowsCollageC-SP144000-72TC-CU-SP131000-2000-CUOOTOS-A-SP14

Their custom design program offers a variety of sizes, colors, and finishes–all made to order right here in the USA, and ready in 30 days! The custom colors program offers palettes for bedroom, occasional, and youth–which make the process even more convenient. You can choose from over 650 fabrics and leather to build your own sofa, sectional, chair, ottoman, bed, and pillow.

The HGTV Home Furniture Collection is also made by Bassett and includes bedroom dining, occasional, accents and its own custom upholstery program that we’ve been dying to try out! We love the modernity, coziness, and bold colors of all their furniture that takes simple pieces and turns them into statement pieces.  We’re so excited to see what they have in store for us in Vegas! They’ve even been kind enough to GIVE AWAY one of these awesome “You Design It-We Make It” accent chairs at Design Camp 2014!

Tiny Little Pretty Things

We are both perfectionists, OBSESSED with details. Obsessed–I’m sure many designers can relate. That’s why when we’re designing  a lifestyle that’s elegant and refined we seek out furnishing companies that understand just as well that it’s ALL about the small things. Caracole’ finishes and fabrics, surprisingly styled drawer interiors, and jewelry-inspired hardware is subtle glamour that belongs in everyone’s lives. Everything Caracole is so beautiful and whimsical! We cannot get enough.

Exquisitely styled, The Bees Knees begs to be floated in a room so you can appreciate it from all angles. It’s a glamorous breath of fresh air for your décor.

High quality, unique side tables and accessories that add personality, like the Bubbles side table, are what set Caracole apart. This retro accent table is perfect for those who like to mix styles, finishes, and materials. We’ve seen this piece work in a boho-shabby-chic Venice beach house, and just as well in a Manhattan penthouse.

French Connection takes a chapter from the pages of fashion with its ombre Taupe Silver Leaf finish. The  custom-designed ginko-leaf hardware and linen-inspired damask pattern on the drawer interiors pull the look together seamlessly and unexpectedly.

Screen Shot 2014-07-05 at 1.15.26 PM

A favorite from this spring’s High Point Market, Hocus Pocus takes its inspiration from one of our best-selling pieces Smoke and Mirrors. The imported Italian smoked mirrored doors are an instant conversation starter, and that hardware … simply divine.

Screen Shot 2014-07-05 at 1.15.03 PM

Sociables is Caracole’s largest and most dramatic cocktail table. An unexpectedly warm Taupe Silver Leaf finish has been applied to the metal base, bringing elegance with it wherever it goes.

We love our Caracole glam,  but they surprised us with another, softer side:  Organic and artful, yet sleek and stylish, the neutrality of the Cat’s Meow sofa lets us have fun mixing and matching and changing up the pillows all the time!

Screen Shot 2014-07-05 at 1.15.37 PMScreen Shot 2014-07-05 at 1.15.43 PM

The texture and color exude calm, while the shape is more modern and edgy–You’ve got a lot of options with this one! They also have so many customizable options you can check out on their site: http://www.caracole.com/home

Timeless, Elegant, Painted Tole-Glam

Since we’re getting ready for Design Camp in Las Vegas, we’re looking for glamour. The lacquer and gold leaf iron finishes from Worlds Away caught our eye. Gaining life as an import company that revitalized the “painted tole” look; Worlds Away pushes design boundaries by pampering every room. Worlds Away products have a variety is awesome finishes which make it easy mix and match with any style. Worlds away designers draw inspiration from every area specifically looking to Mid-century, Regency, Modern, and transitional styles.

Screen Shot 2014-06-30 at 1.11.01 PM

Recently inspired by all things brass, Worlds Away designers suggest some of their favorite pieces like the Foley and Charlotte lamps–We couldn’t agree more! Their unique flair is the perfect addition of light and color to any interior.

Screen Shot 2014-06-30 at 1.11.13 PM

Today, Worlds Away is constantly growing and expanding in various areas. They recently added a permanent showroom at High Point and a new sector specifically for hospitality design are both further proof of their longevity and innovation. Worlds Away continues to create furniture and accessories pieces that are timeless and elegant.

TOTO USA has the Royal Flush

We all love shopping for pillows and picking out paint colors, but when it comes to the nuts and bolts of practical design, it can seem like the necessary evil of the design process–We’re talking about shopping for toilets and hardware. But we’ve found a way to make shopping for a new showerhead as fun as shopping for a new down comforter, and as an added bonus: we found a way to feel conscientious while doing it. TOTO (www.totousa.com) is a leading manufacturer of residential and commercial bathroom products including toilets, faucets, showers, lavatories, baths and accessories. They have been innovating products that help to make people’s lives cleaner, healthier, and more luxurious for over a century–it’s amazing it took us this long to discover them!

Screen Shot 2014-06-30 at 9.56.59 AM

We absolutely love their new Neorest line, which includes the ultra-high efficiency Neorest 700H.  Engineered to provide its user with unrivaled comfort, the intuitive Neorest 700H optimizes water use with either a 1.0 or 0.8 gallon flush.  The ewater+ technology uses electrolyzed water to mist the bowl after each flush to reduce the need for harsh chemicals during cleaning.  So not only does the Neorest 700H save water with each flush, it also helps to cut down on using harmful chemicals– great news for the environment and for our allergies!

Screen Shot 2014-06-30 at 9.57.08 AM

TOTO’s new Aero Showers do something incredibly innovative– they use air injection technology to increase water volume by adding air into each water droplet. The result is the feeling of a full, luxurious shower while using less water than a standard shower.

Screen Shot 2014-06-30 at 9.57.16 AM

TOTO plays a significant role in leading the sustainability charge in our industry. In fact, they go beyond just products to help ensure environmental responsibility across all their company activities. Employee recycling programs, optimized packaging size to reduce materials, and charging stations for electric cars are just a few of the ways they’re doing their  part to ensure the health of our environment–We love their products and we love their business philosophy!

Light Topic: The Nouveau-Traditional Lamp

We’ve been noticing some new lamp trends recently, and we like what we are seeing!

AJ_cosgrove_home_spaces

First: The over-sized lamp that can take any room to the next level. It’s a highly innovative way of changing your room’s focal point and a fairly inexpensive way of updating a room. Barbara Cosgrove, identified by her ability to put a modern twist on the traditional lighting fixture, has a number of super cool over-sized pieces that we’ve seen beautifully installed in bedrooms and common spaces.

AJ_cosgrove_home_spaces4-2

AJ_cosgrove_home_spaces2

We’ve also noticed an increase in the client’s desire to customize their lamps, turning them into one of a kind works of art, or as Barbara Cosgrove might say, ” little sculptures everyone has in their home.” Barbara Cosgrove’s signature painted parchment shades can be painted any custom color.  That way, the scale of design is confident, the look is classic, and will fit perfectly into your home.

Barcelona

Lastly but certainly not least, is the nouveau-traditional lamp–a fancy-schmansy, eclectic mix of old and new. These are Barbara Cosgrove’s specialty, something she has perfected over the years. Lamps may be the most common statue, but a Barbara Cosgrove Lamp is truly a work of art.

Mirror Image Home: The Fairest of Them All!

We sought out to find the right collection of mirrors that could be the perfect eye-pulling center piece–not just above a bathroom sink, but in a bedroom or living space:

Mirror Image Home’s annual collaboration with industry leading designers offers fantastic collections, but this year have been some of our absolute favorites! Check out our highlights:

Screen Shot 2014-06-27 at 6.45.26 PM

Michael S. Smith sought out to create a collection of mirrors that was “accessible, yet sophisticated,” and indeed he did! We can definitely see ourselves using these in California costal residences AND in more commercial spaces. The versatility of these mirrors might be our favorite thing about them!

Screen Shot 2014-06-27 at 6.45.34 PM

Bunny William’s wanted to exemplify her eclectic, cultured taste in her mirror collection and we can definitely see her well-traveled influences in these inspired pieces. The Bunny Williams mirrors are perfect for intimate spaces like bedrooms so the detail on the mirrors can be fully appreciated.

Screen Shot 2014-06-27 at 6.45.42 PM

Barclay Butera describes mirrors as being “jewelry for the room,” framing their subjects best qualities. In designing his collection, he was greatly concerned with crafting designs that were both masculine and feminine. Because Mirror Image Home has a wide range of manufacturing capabilities Barclay was able to create a myriad of styles that go seamlessly with a variety of lifestyles. From slick city metals and rustic distressed wood to sophisticated lacquers, it’s one of our favorite and most overwhelming collaborations to shop!

Screen Shot 2014-06-27 at 6.45.51 PM

Additional wall décor from Mirror Image Home includes framed art, specimen shadow boxes, and custom sized square and rectangle mirrors. Custom finishes such as color lacquer and metallic leafing are also available.  For more information visit: www.mirrorimagehome.com
